Driving Record Points
On top of fines, if you’re issued a Delaware speeding ticket, you
will get points on your license. Driving record points help the state
track your driving history. Once you accumulate points, they stay on
your record for one year; after one year, they stay on your record as
half of a point for an additional year. If you accumulate 12 points,
you have to take a mandatory driving course or you’ll lose your license
for two months. As you accumulate more and more points, license
suspensions become longer.
If you’re caught speeding, points are added to your license according
to how fast you were going. You’ll get two points for going 1-9 miles
per hour over the limit, four points for 10-14 miles per hour over,
five points for 15-19 miles per hour over, and five points plus
automatic suspension for going 20 miles per hour or more over the
limit. If you’re caught speeding in a school zone, you’ll get six
points added to your license, no matter how fast you were going. If you
were speeding under 15 miles miler per hour over the limit, you won’t
receive points if this is your first offense, the ticket is paid in
full, and you complete a defensive driving course.
