Reasons to Take the Course
The first and most obvious reasons to take a Delaware defensive
driving school course is that it will help you become a better driver.
We all make mistakes from time to time, but if you’ve accumulated a
number of Delaware speeding tickets and other citations, you might need
a refresher course. Defensive driving school isn’t driver’s ed, but it
is a good place to work on your driving skills.
The state rewards you for being an improved driver. When you take a
defensive driving school class, you’re eligible to have three points
dropped from your license. Delaware driving points are used to track
you driving skills. If you accumulate 12 points in two years, you could
lose your license. So, by dropping points, you’re protecting your right
to drive. In some cases, the three-point credit can be applied to a
specific ticket in order to drop the ticket completely. This is at the
discretion of a judge.
A third reason to consider taking a Delaware defensive driving course
is the auto insurance discount you’ll receive. Insurance is expensive,
with many people paying over $1,000 every year for coverage. If you
take a driver improvement class through a state-approved defensive
driving school, you’ll receive a 10% Delaware insurance discount. You
can take a shorter version of the class as a refresher course three
years later to boost that insurance discount to 15%.
