Risks of Not Having Auto Insurance
If you cancel your Delaware auto insurance or are dropped due to
nonpayment, the Delaware Division of Motor Vehicles will be immediately
notified. The DMV also routinely selects random drivers to audit, and
if you’re pulled over for any reason, you’ll have to show proof of
insurance. As you can see, it is extremely easy to get caught driving
without insurance.
The fines for driving without insurance vary greatly. If you have
insurance but are simply not carrying your proof, fines start at $100,
but if you aren’t covered at all, fines on the first offense could cost
up to $1500. Subsequent offenses often cost up to $3000. On top of the
fines, you may loose your license for up to six months, and your
vehicle registration will be suspended until you’re covered, which
means that you’ll have to pay for towing as well.
Remember, if you’re driving without Delaware auto insurance and get
into an accident, if you’re found at fault, you’ll be responsible for
all costs involved. Accidents cause damages medically and to property,
which means you could be hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt until
it is all said and done, on top of the fines you have to pay for not
carrying auto insurance and causing an accident.
